The gas-powered tankless water heater was invented in the late 1890s, but the electric model wasn’t introduced until 40 years later. Both types and several variations have greatly increased in popularity. Are they maintenance-free, though? No. Is there a difference between the types of maintenance they need? Yes, but it’s more along the line of quantity rather than anything else, which makes sense.
What Types of Maintenance Do Water Heaters Need?
Water
A tank water heater and a tankless need periodic cleaning and descaling. A tank heater maintains a very large vat of water at a constant temperature. Therefore, it’s essential to keep the tank and the lines descaled and clean, so they can provide a continuous stream of water when needed.
A tankless heater doesn’t store water. Rather, it heats water on demand to supply a constant stream at a preset temperature. Although this eliminates the need for descaling a large vat, we recommend that you annually clean the pipes to ensure they’re clear of debris and buildup.
Connections
Both a tankless and a tank water heater have electrical connections, even if they’re solar or gas-powered, because you have a temperature regulator and other electric components that can malfunction. Checking the electrical connections may reduce costly repair bills in the future.
Tankless and tank water heaters have water connections, so it’s essential that the water can flow securely to or through them. Check to ensure that you have no loose connections or leaky fittings.
Although a tankless water heater doesn’t have a pilot light, both appliances have an igniter, probably electronic, that should be periodically checked for efficiency and proper function.
Leaks
Leaks are more common with tank water heaters as they age and continue to store many gallons of water. Check for puddles or other signs of water leaking under or around your tank water heater. If there’s no loose connection, the leak may be internal.
Although a leak is less common with a tankless water heater, it can occur. If you notice puddles or damp areas around your it, check for damage to the unit and lines. In earthquake-prone areas, ground shifting can compromise the integrity of a unit or its installation.
